By now, the streetwear legends of Stüssy have mastered this whole history of collaborating with Nike. The two brands have worked together for over 20 years now and show no signs of slowing down. Last year, the two industry giants teamed up on a handful of radiators, the Air Zoom Spiridon and the Air Zoom Kukini being two standouts. And this month, Stüssy and the Swoosh will be releasing their very first sneaker together, the Air Huarache LE.
The Air Huarache debuted in 1991 and was marketed to runners promising a hug for the feet. Just like many other memorable and cult Nike sneakers, it was designed by iconic designer Tinker Hatfield. Almost a decade later, Stüssy and Nike have teamed up to create an earthy colorway for the silhouette. It was an unlikely marriage between sportswear and streetwear for the time. (You can thank industry heavyweights Fraser Cooke and Michael Kopelman for getting ahead of the game.) Now the beloved sneaker is back in two distinct earth-toned colourways, featuring an upper in nubuck and textile and a serrated foam sole with Nike air cushioning. And, of course, the famous Air Huarache outer cage, love it or hate it.
This is a proven movement in the sneaker world: throw in a new but old style and sit back because it sells out in a flash, which is exactly what happened this week when the collaborative shoe was released. fallen. So yes, the latest Stüssy x Nike sneaker was destined to be a hit. And that’s because it was already a hit when it first came out over two decades ago. That said, a sneaker has to be pretty darn good to stay in demand for 21 years – luckily for Stüssy and Nike, this Air Huarache is just that.
