Michael Jordan set the bar pretty high on the basketball court and set it just as high in retail stores with his highly popular line of Jordan brand shoes after his career. Jordans controls nearly 60% of the US basketball shoe retail market under Nike’s umbrella, according to Yahoo. And now Nike is launching shoes that could potentially take retired star Kobe Bryant down the same path, with the release of the new Nike Kobe AD shoe, as Sneaker News reports.
While not a standalone sub-brand, as Jordan is with Nike, the new Kobe AD represents the first edition of its signature line after retiring at the end of the 2015-2016 season. .
As Nike itself admits on its site, âWe’ve officially reached life after Kobe. A life where new talents will pick up where they left off on hardwood. It’s corporate language, “we still think there is life in the Kobe franchise, so let’s keep the band together.” And while Kobe has long been a Nike star with his first shoe released in 2005, before that he wore all three Adidas stripes. There is no doubt that the sneaker design process should be exhaustive, given the logistics of production and marketing, but there are some models that can leave you confused.
The decidedly more sleek and understated Kobe AD features an upper with Dynamic Flywire cables and a Lunarlon midsole with Zoom Air units in the heel. It has long been known that Bryant, unlike other world-class players, prefers low-tops to conventional high-tops. The heel tabs resemble a snake on the left (due to its nickname “Black Mamba”), with its signature on the right.
This chic new edition of Kobe AD will also be available just in time for Christmas gifts: November 22 at 10 a.m. EST. Nike lists it at $ 160.
